A review on New Spamming Tactics

How many emails do you have in your inbox? Out of all the emails you received, how many of them are what you expecting? If you open your e-mail account and you found that there are several unknown emails inside, then you might be the spam mail victim.

An email is considered as spam if the recipient is not an acquaintance, customer, or opt-in. Spam is usually, but not always, sent to a large number of people to promote a product or service. The original term “Spam” was coined in 1937 by the Hormel Corporation as a name for its potted meat product. Spam is also known as Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE).

The typical spamming method we could see in the last time is something like a junk mail that spread around the network which merely serves the purpose of advertising. However, time has changed and there are new spamming methods arose which is much more tricky and even contain spywares inside. Such techniques like PDF spam, Piggyback spam and Greeting card spam can defeat the anti-spam software.

PDF spams are those emails that attached with a PDF file so that the anti-spam software is unable to detect the content of the PDF file. Thus the users will only realize it was a spam after they open the email.

On the other hand, Piggyback spam is a graphical email that sent by some unknown retailers which contain a link and entice you to click it if you can’t read the content of the mail. Once you click on the link, it may then automatic download the spyware and malware to your computer.

Another type of spamming method is Greeting card spam. Just like its name, the spam was spread in the form of greeting card. People feel happy when they receive greeting card from someone. However, when you click on the link in the greeting card, it may eventually turn up to download the virus to your computer. Therefore, we must always aware of those greeting card sent by strangers.

In conclusion, e-mail has made our life easier in term of its cost, speed and customization features. However, we must always pay a major concern on the spamming problem that happened around us. Extensive steps must be taken by both users and websites so that we could have “spam clean” electronic environment.
